The Honourable Peter Kent, Minister of State of Foreign Affairs (Americas), today congratulated the people of Suriname as they celebrate their country’s Independence Day.
“Canada salutes the people of Suriname as they mark their country’s 34th anniversary of independence,” said Minister of State Kent. “Canada and Suriname enjoy a close, long-standing relationship based on shared values, including our mutual commitment to democracy, prosperity and security.”
“During my visit to Suriname in February, I had the opportunity to work directly with my Surinamese counterparts to ensure that the strong political, trade, investment and economic relationship we share will continue to grow in the years to come,” said Minister of State Kent. “Canada remains committed to strengthening these bilateral ties and to supporting Suriname as an integral member of the Caribbean Community.”
Surinamese people celebrate their Independence Day today in countries around the world, including Canada, which is home to thousands of people of Surinamese origin.
