Today at the Thornhill Community Centre, Cilla Kent, wife of Member of Parliament for Thornhill and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (Americas), Peter Kent delivered greetings on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of the Literacy Council York South Adult Learning Centre. The Minister is currently touring Central America with Governor General Michaelle Jean. Mrs. Kent, herself an ESL teacher and crusader for literacy expressed her sincere support for the organization and highlighted the plight of nearly 25% of younger Canadians that suffer from literary comprehension difficulties. Along with Mrs. Kent, MPP Thornhill Peter Shurman, His Worship Mayor Frank Scarpitti of Markham and Ward 1 Councilor Valerie Burke all presented awards and extended warm greetings to the organization. After the many testimonials from tutors and students a grand cake was cut by the speakers and was handed out to the assembled.
The Literacy Council South York Region was formed in 1989 by volunteers in the community to assist those with reading and comprehension deficiency. If someone you know needs help or knows someone that can teach reading, writing, mathematics or computers please call: 905-771-7323
