The Olympic torch passed through the Federal Riding of Thornhill Thursday December Dec 17th to the delight of thousands of citizens lining the streets. Beginning at the north end of the riding at Yonge and Hwy. 407 at 1:30 it headed straight by the Constituency Office at 7600 Yonge Street down to Steeles Avenue.
The Olympic Torch is a symbol of the Olympic Games. Its purpose is to commemorate the theft of fire from Zeus (the Greek G-d) by Prometheus, where a fire was kept burning throughout the celebration of the ancient Olympic Games. Extinguished for many years, the fire was reintroduced at the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam, and it has been part of the modern Olympic Games ever since.
The Winter Games will commence in Vancouver on Friday February 12, 2010
