Human Resources and Skills Development Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program pays off for Thornhillers
By providing funding to non-profit and other organizations, the New Horizons for Seniors Program helps to ensure that seniors can benefit from, and contribute to, the quality of life in their communities, through active living and participation in social activities.
The Program funds projects that help improve the quality of life for seniors and their communities – from enabling seniors to share their knowledge, wisdom and experiences with others, to improving facilities for seniors' programs and activities, to raising awareness of elder abuse.
There are three kinds of funding: Community Participation and Leadership, Capital Assistance, and Elder Abuse Awareness.
Four organizations in Thornhill were recently granted funding for their very worthy projects and they are:
Organization: Concord/Maple/Thornhill/Woodbridge (CMTW) Seniors Association
Proposal Title: Promoting Safety Practices, Physical and Mental Activities and Social Interaction
Activity: Seniors in the community of Thornhill will participate in physical, mental, social and educational activities provided by local seniors.
Granted: $24,326
Organization: Filipino Seniors Club
Proposal Title: Joys in Aging
Activity: Seniors will conduct recreational activities and intergenerational learning such as cultural day trips, physical fitness classes, cooking classes, arts and crafts courses, gardening, computer training, fire and safety workshops. They will also hold lecture symposiums with youth to reduce seniors' isolation and connect with youth.
Granted: $25,000
Organization: Parya Trillium Foundation
Proposal Title: Able Hands & Healthy Minds
Activity: Seniors will conduct workshops on flower arranging, cooking and basic computer skills to assist in reducing social isolation.
Granted: $24,810
Organization: Thornhill Senior CitizenClub
Proposal Title: Building Bridges
Activity: Seniors will organize a low impact aerobic fitness program and computer training for their peers and will share their wisdom with youth during planned seminars.
Granted: $22,100
