“Taxpayers deserve nothing less than our Government’s full support of the decision made by the Board of Internal Economy.” said MP Peter Kent. “Our Government’s unyielding commitment to increasing accountability is further proof that, interests of the taxpayers come first under the leadership of Prime Minister Harper” Our Government fully supports the decision by the Board of Internal Economy to conduct an audit of House of Commons and Members of Parliament expenses.
This is a victory for taxpayers.
Our party came into office on a wave of calls for increased accountability and a promise to be different than the Liberals.
Today, over four years later, we are still delivering on this commitment.
Since taking office in 2006, we have greatly increased accountability and transparency across government.
This includes actions such as:
- Giving the Auditor General the power to "follow the money" and audit outside organizations who receive government funding;
- Greatly expanding the number of government institutions subject to the Access to Information Act; and
- Expanding the powers of Officers of Parliament and creating new institutions like a Commissioner of Lobbying and a Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner.
Conservatives will continue to be committed to improving and increasing the accountability of government to taxpayers.
