Announcement - Jewish Russian Community Centre (JRCC), East Thornhill

January 19, 2015

This morning MP Peter Kent announced almost $50,000 in funding for the JRCC in Thornhill. Below are the remarks he made during the announcement.

  • Good Morning Everyone
  • On behalf of the Hon. Jason Kenney, Minister of Employment and Social Development  and Minister for Multiculturalism,  I am pleased to announce the award of  the Enabling Accessibility Grant  of  $49, 615 awarded to the  JRCC
  • This grant will be used to eliminate barriers to accessibility in this building by constructing   an access ramp, installation of a barrier free washroom  and making the doorways and hallways safe for persons with disabilities.
  • This grant will enable seniors living in the Thornhill to actively participate in community life.
  • Our government recognises that Canada is a society for all ages and upholds the principles of dignity, independence, participation, fairness and security for all ages including seniors.
  • My office continues to work with community organisations to support them with guidance in accessing government resources to create and sustain meaningful programs.  Three other organisations have received funding support from the Enabling Accessibility Program.
  • We have increased senior participation in community life by doubling the number of senior organisations receiving funding in Thornhill over the past four years.
  • This year, for example, 14 organisations received funding for senior recreational and intergenerational programs from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.  A total of $668,000.
  • I commend the work of the JRCC for the past three decades, serving the Jewish and wider community in the GTA.   I know that the recent acquisition of this building will enable them to continue to provide social service and community programs to the growing population of seniors and youth in East Thornhill.
