July 16, 2016 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OTTAWA, ON - Official Opposition Foreign Affairs critic, the Hon. Peter Kent, released the following statement on the attempted military coup in Turkey:
"Today it is clear that the attempted coup failed because it was opposed not only by the the democratically-elected government and its supporters, but by opposition parties and a wide segment of the population. "The Turkish people know well their country's history of military takeovers and the periods of history that ensued. The ballot box must be the supreme tool of democratic change; not troops and tanks. "But, even as the Erdogan Presidency is restored, Canadians and freedom-loving friends of the Turkish people everywhere, urge restraint by the President and all parties in the days and weeks ahead. "We join Canadians in wishing the Turkish people a calm and peaceful recovery from the unacceptable events of the past 24 hours." -30-
