Resurgence of Anti-Semitism and Hate in Thornhill

September 23, 2020

Along with the anxieties, fears, frustrations and anger spawned by the continuing COVID crisis,  we’ve seen a reprehensible resurgence of anti-Semitism and hate in Thornhill, other Canadian communities and, to greater and lesser degrees, in societies around the world.

Some of it is overt, as the case of the ravings and attempted assault by an individual in Thornhill, captured on video and reported in the accompanying article on B’nai Brith’s website.    Some of it is painfully routine - incidents of  hate-driven vandalism - swastikas and such - and hateful social media spewings including spurious accusations that Jews are both spreading the pandemic and profiting from it.

As we approach the sombre observance of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year in Judaism, I call on Thornhillers of all faiths and creeds to reject and repudiate any and all forms of the world’s oldest hate and, to our Jewish community, may I offer a heartfelt, Shalom Aleichem, peace be upon you.
